About the event

Art with an Accent is a Teatro Vista Productions (TVP) immersive, multi-sensorial experience around the world of Latin American Pop Art. At the core of the celebration will be the life and work of the iconic artist Marisol Escobar. Marisol was one of the most charismatic and enigmatic artists of the New York Pop Art Scene, known as the "Latin Garbo". She was a muse, friend and collaborator of Andy Warhol. Although she was a key figure in her lifetime, for years, she was written off from the Alpha male histories of Pop Art. In 2021, the Warhol foundation launched an exhibition and book to reclaim her enormous influence. And now TVP explores stepping into her mind and opening the doors of her expression to you.

As part of the evening's events, we will be honoring the life and legacy of our cultural treasure and Chicago madrina, Charín Álvarez

I don't think there is a theater fan in Chicago who hasn't seen Charín in stellar roles more than once. Her turn in the title role of Teatro Vista's ¡Bernarda! was the culmination of a career that will continue to surprise us for years to come. Charín will be honored with The Sandra Marquez Legacy Award for her years of excellence on stage and her unwavering commitment to the advancement of our people.

WE ARE EXPLORING

Using Marisol's evocative art as our guiding star, the curators posed a compelling question to our artistic collaborators: 'If Marisol is your language, then what is your accent?' This inquiry serves not only as an invitation but as a daring challenge, igniting the spark of inspiration in each contributor.

Every piece showcased resonates with an electrifying energy, blending homage with satire, capturing the essence of Marisol's art movement while inviting you into her deeply private inner life. This exploration was funded by an award from the National Endowment of the Arts.

More than a mere fundraiser or art exhibition, Art with an Accent stands as a jubilant celebration of community, identity, and the boundless power found within collective voices harmonizing as one.

ABOUT OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

Art with an Accent is a cornerstone of our fundraising efforts, providing critical support for our artistic programming. With these funds, we support our artists as they explore innovative storytelling that uses the tenets of theatre to create live stage performances, film and media arts.

Teatro Vista, Theatre with a View, was founded in 1990 to address the lack of opportunities for Latine artists. Now in our 34th year, we have evolved into a non-profit multimedia theatre company dedicated to multidisciplinary artists of color whose artistic expression on stage and beyond is rooted in the transformative power of storytelling.

By supporting us, you are investing in a company that:

  • has served the Latine community for 33 years.

  • has presented over 65 productions, including more than 20 world premieres and 15 Midwest premieres, providing a platform for Latine artists to thrive.

  • has all current leadership roles filled by Latinas: Board President, Board Treasurer, Artistic Directors and Artistic Producer.

  • Employs and builds resumes of 50 to 80 artists a year, a majority artists of color, providing them opportunities to further their careers in a supportive and collaborative environment.

  • brings productions that celebrate the nuance and diversity of the Latine community.

  • has an award winning ensemble of artists and provides them with opportunities to develop their work, as well as professional development.

  • has been critically acclaimed, award winning and operates as the only Equity Latino Theatre company in the Midwest. While the entertainment industry grapples with its identity and lack of inclusion, Teatro Vista has always known who it's working for and who it serves.
