Satya Chávez
BIO
Satya Chávez (They/She/He) is a multidisciplinary artist and award-winning composer, sound designer, and performer whose work has been developed and produced across the country. Known for their innovative storytelling through live-looping, Chávez’s music and theatrical work explore identity, justice, and collective liberation.
As a composer, Chávez co-created Refuge with Andrew Rosendorf, a border play that received an NNPN Rolling World Premiere, the Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award, a Venturous Theater Fund Grant, and a MAP Fund Grant. Refuge has been produced at Curious Theatre, Theo Ubique, Unicorn Theatre, and Theatre Lab FAU—earning multiple Jeff Awards for Best Original Music, and more
Other major works include Memorabilia (Jeff Award for Sound Design of a Play) and ¡Bernarda! at Teatro Vista, Corduroy (Chicago Shakespeare Theater), Black Bone (Definition Theatre), First Party Consent (First Floor Theater), and Empanada (The Public San Antonio). Their acclaimed one-person musical Where Did We Sit on the Bus?—featuring Chávez’s live-looping performance and original score—has toured nationally to Actors Theatre of Louisville, Cleveland Playhouse, Steppenwolf, The Denver Center, and more.
In Theater for Young Audiences, Chávez has co-created new musicals such as Brighter Futures with Gabe Ruiz and J Godwin (Paramount Theatre) and Seattle History Remix with Idris Goodwin (Seattle Children’s Theater), where they served as the company’s first-ever Artist in Residence.
Chávez’s work has been commissioned by Goodman Theatre, TheatreSquared, Seattle Children’s Theater, and The Denver Center for the Performing Arts. They are the inaugural recipient of the Jeff Impact Fellowship.
